Betadine is an over-the-counter antiseptic ointment. It helps prevent and treat infections in minor wounds. It contains povidone-iodine, which helps kill a wide range of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and some viruses. This action helps keep the affected area clean and supports the natural healing process.
The ointment is commonly used for minor cuts, abrasions, burns, and skin wounds. It forms a protective layer over the skin, reducing the risk of contamination and infection. It is meant for external use only and should be applied as directed. Do not use it inside your body.
Apply a thin layer of Betadine ointment to the affected area. Cover it with a sterile dressing if required. Repeat the application as advised. Avoid using large amounts or applying it for a prolonged period unless recommended by a doctor.
Betadine ointment is generally well-tolerated when used as directed. However, some individuals may experience mild skin irritation or sensitivity at the application site. If irritation persists or worsens, discontinue use and consult a doctor. Do not use this ointment if you are allergic to iodine or any of its components. It is not recommended for deep wounds, animal bites, or severe burns without medical advice. Avoid contact with the eyes. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water. The ointment can interact with products containing hydrogen peroxide or silver. Therefore, it is advised to avoid them while using this ointment.
Store the ointment at a temperature not exceeding 30°C. Protect it from light and do not freeze. Keep it out of the reach of children. This ointment is intended for minor wound care and should not replace proper medical treatment for serious injuries.
